Residents of Christmas Island are reminded of Section 4.4 of the above Local Law.

• Section 4.4(1) prohibits the burning of rubbish, refuse or other materials.

• Section 4.4 (3) regulates the burning of materials on rural residential zoned property.

It is an offence not to comply with the above sections of the Animals, Environment & Nuisance Local Law 2018.

On mainland Australia we have seen fires in areas that have been previously wet for centuries and the increased dry vegetation on Christmas Island requires us all to be aware of the danger of fire outbreaks.

Smoke generated in residential areas may also be problematic for the elderly and to sufferers of asthma and other conditions in the area, especially if they are asleep during the period.
